Memoirs of lawyer and government official Wirt Howe, ca. 1880-1939, in which he writes of his boyhood in New Orleans, student life at Tulane and Harvard University, his years as a lawyer in New York City and his life in Washington, D.C. (1919-1933) while working for the Board of Contract Adjustment of the War Department, and, prior to that, for the United States Shipping Board. Also describes his activities in Knoxville, Tennessee, working for the Tennessee Valley Authority (1933-1940). For the period 1919-1940, Howe writes in great detail of life and personalities in Washington, politics, general news of the day, anecdotes of presidents Coolidge, Hoover, and F. D. Roosevelt, government policies, patronage, life in Knoxville, the development and growth of the Tennessee Valley Authority, etc. Includes a forward written by his sister, Bessy Howe Heward, as well as numerous addenda, notes and corrections, and inserted materials, including a black and white portrait of Howe and a map of Tennessee with annotations noting the sites of Tennessee Valley Authority projects.
